... More Canadian trivia than you can shake a hockey stick at!

    June 15, 2006.

I used to work in technical support for a 24/7 call centre. One day I received a call from an individual who asked what hours the call centre was open. I told him, "The number you dialled is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week." He responded, "Is that Eastern or Pacific time?" Wanting to end the call rather quickly, I said, "Uh, Pacific."

[John] A week ago Saturday, June 3, 2006, some new inductees were admitted to "Canada's Walk of Fame". Many Canadians are unaware of the existence of this annual event and honour, yet it exists. Quite different from Hollywood's version, this event has been around just under a decade, yet now has one hundred inductees from diverse backgrounds. Rather than simply supplying you with just a Web link, I thought I would take a few minutes of your time to give you a bit of background on this event. I will also list this year's inductees and make a few comments.

It has been a while since we actually sent a newsletter from headquarters, yet what better way than to introduce those that are unaware of the occasion of the "Walk's" annual awards show, and update those that are aware as to what is going on? Hopefully those of you already aware saw the event broadcast on television on Sunday, June 11.

    Canada's Walk of Fame
    By John MacDonald

The first fourteen (the most in any one year) inductees were enshrined in the newly formed "Canada's Walk of Fame" back on June 25, 1998. Then, the event was a nothing more than a simple affair which included the dedication, speeches and a small tribute dinner. The individuals honoured at that time were: From the world of music: Bryan Adams, Glenn Gould and Gordon Lightfoot; the film industry was represented by: John Candy, Jim Carrey, Norman Jewison and Christopher Plummer; the other seven honoured were Pierre Berton, Karen Kain, Rich Little, Anne Murray, Bobby Orr, Barbara Ann Scott and race car driver Jacques Villeneuve. Villeneuve was the first to respond to the invitation; others (or their living representatives) fell in quick formation and the rest is history.

This year (2006) the seven individuals and one team chosen for induction were: Jann Arden, Robert Goulet, Alex Trebek, Pamela Anderson, Paul Shaffer, Brendan Fraser, Eugene Levy and the team of "Crazy Canucks" -- skiers Steve Podborski, Ken Read, Dave Irwin and the late Dave Murray.

Although Walk of Fame inductees are generally individuals, as with this year's kudos to the "Crazy Canucks" other groups that have been honoured for their collective work include the music groups "Tragically Hip" and "Rush", the circus troupe known as "Cirque du Soleil" and the comedy duo of Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster ("Wayne and Shuster") to name a few.

For a little Canadian trivia, I have chosen to let you know a bit more about one of this years inductee's,

Although primarily known as the host of television game show "Jeopardy", Alex Trebek has been asked to emcee many affairs over the years. He is probably one of the most learned members of "The Walk" and would make a great contestant on "Jeopardy" himself. Occasionally you see his surname spelled "Trebec", which is incorrect. He was born George Alexander Trebek or Giorgi Suka-Alex Trebek, with due deference to his Ukrainian heritage. He was born on July 22, 1940, in Sudbury, Ontario, and graduated from the University of Ottawa with a bachelor of science in philosophy in 1961. Mr. Trebek has been married twice and has a daughter (Emily) and a son (Matthew).

To conclude this small tribute of our own I'll give you a few links to some of the more interesting pages on the Walk of Fame Web site. Have fun!
